RHD seeks to acquire, lease Rural Healthcare Developers is a healthcare management and development company devoted to “bringing modern healthcare to rural underserved communities.” RHD seeks to acquire, lease or manage under-performing medical facilities; establish inpatient and outpatient clinics for seniors with emotional or behavioral problems; develop aggressive marketing plans and teams to promote growth of new and existing programs, provide financial and management consulting services to medical facilities, From a healthcare management standpoint, challenges abound in introducing and preserving quality healthcare in rural communities. Hospitals are central to the delivery of healthcare so keeping local hospitals on firm financial footing is a key element of RHD’s mission. Often rural communities cannot attract medical professionals because they do not have the financial resources to compete with large hospitals. Thorough knowledge of reimbursement for services and strategies for maximizing revenue are essential to the survival of rural hospitals, and their ability to attract quality medical staff. Rural Healthcare Developers was launched in January 2007 by Ray Shoemaker, an innovative hospital administrator who had just received Modern Healthcare magazine’s “Up and Comers Award” for healthcare achievers under 40 years old. In the planning stages of the company, a multi-faceted business model targeted struggling medical facilities in rural communities that RHD would seek to acquire, manage or lease. A worn hospital mired in debt in the middle of the Mississippi Delta was exactly the vehicle for moving the company toward the core of its self-stated mission. Within six months the hospital grounds and halls had been cleaned to a spit shine, admissions were climbing, bills were being paid and the community watched in amazement and appreciation. At the same time, RHD managers took a shut-down hospital in Smith County and recovered a valuable medical resource for residents of that rural county. RHD has entered into a contract with the Choctaw County Medical Center in Ackerman to manage the hospital, nursing home and senior care unit. In April 2008 RHD purchased the Humphreys County Memorial Hospital in Belzoni, renaming it Patients’ Choice Medical Center of Humphreys County. RHD also manages Patients’ Choice Behavioral Health of Pineville, KY, and Trinity Hospital in Erin. TN.
